Missing Student Notification Policy and Procedure

Emergency Contact Information

All resident students have the opportunity to identify an individual(s) to be contacted by the University in case of emergencies, including if the student is determined to be missing for 24 hours. This emergency contact information will be accessible only to authorized campus officials and law enforcement.

Investigation

If a student has been missing for 24 or more hours, any person should report that information to:

  • Any residence director or;
  • Director of Campus Safety and Security (campus extension 6911).

In the event of a missing student report, the director of Campus Safety and Security will:

  1. Notify the assistant vice president of Student Life and the vice president of Student Life immediately.
  2. Investigate the report and collaborate with Student Life and other University personnel to contact the missing student.
  3. Determine if the student is in fact missing.

Notification

Once it has been determined that a student is missing:

  1. The director of Campus Safety and Security will:
    1. Notify the assistant vice president of Student Life.
    2. Notify Steubenville City Police within 24 hours after determining that the student is missing.

     

  2. The assistant vice president of Student Life will:
    1. Within 24 hours of the determination that the student is missing, notify the individual(s) identified by the missing student as the emergency contact(s).
    2. If the missing student is under the age of 18, notify the student’s parent or guardian as contained in the records of the University within 24 hours of the determination that the student is missing.

This policy is implemented in compliance with the federal Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008.

Any Residence Director, the Director of Student Life, or the Director of the Austrian Program.

In the event of a missing student report, the Austrian Program will:

  1. Notify the appropriate main campus personnel including the Vice President of Student Life immediately.
  2. Investigate the report and collaborate with Student Life and other University personnel to contact the missing student.
  3. Determine if the student is in fact missing.

 

Notification

Once it has been determined that a student is missing:

  1. The Director of Austrian Program will:
    1. Notify Vice President of Student Life and other appropriate main campus personnel.
    2. Notify the Police in Gaming, Austria.
    3. Notify the U.S. Consulate in Vienna, Austria.

     

  2. The Director of the Gaming Program or his delegate will:
    1. Within 24 hours of the determination that the student is missing, notify the individual(s) identified by the missing student as the emergency contact(s).
    2. If the missing student is under the age of 18, notify the student’s parent or guardian as contained in the records of the University within 24 hours of the determination that the student is missing.
