Cybersecurity Incident/Cyber Attack
A cyber incident/attack is an unwelcome attempt to steal, expose, alter, disable or destroy information through unauthorized access to computer systems. Cybercriminals use different methods to launch a cyber-attack that includes malware, phishing, ransomware, man-in-the-middle attack, or other methods.
During a cyberattack…
- Do not turn off the computer. Turning off your computer could destroy important forensic evidence.
- Update or back up all work.
- Immediately contact the ITS Help Desk at [email protected]or via phone at 740-283-4357 and provide the following information
a) When did you first notice the issue?
b) What did you see on the screen?
c) Did you click on any links or go to a website? If so, please describe what you did.
After a cyberattack…
- Follow the instructions provided by the ITS Help Desk.
- Change all your internet account passwords immediately.
- Watch for suspicious activity that asks you to do something right away, offers something that sounds too good to be true, or needs your personal information. Think before you click. When in doubt, do NOT click.
- Check your credit card and bank statements for unrecognizable charges.
- Check your credit reports for any new accounts or loans you didn’t open.
- Be alert for emails and social media users that ask for private information.
- Don’t open an attachment unless you know the sender and are expecting it.
